Dr. Coombs is a physician practicing functional medicine, and he has focused on the treatment of complex chronic medical conditions for over 30 years. His approach looks at the web of multiple underlying factors affecting our health (dietary, environmental, physical, genetic, biochemical, and emotional) and could be described as a ‘systems biology’ approach to medical treatment. This method is highly interactive, and requires motivation and collaboration of the part of the patient in order to achieve best results. Improvement in health, though gradual, is usually long-lasting, because the underlying causes of an illness have been addressed, rather than merely treating its symptoms.
More recently, Dr. Coombs has focused on the biomedical treatment of autism spectrum disorder in children, a complex disorder of neurological development with genetic, environmental, biochemical, and immune factors all contributing to its development. Because preference is now being given to young children with autism, intake of new adult patients is limited to those whom Dr. Coombs is most likely to be able to help with his approach to functional medicine.
